Field Corn Harvesting – A Commodity Crop!

In addition to all of the specialty crops I grow…like asparagus, strawberries, sweet corn, and pumpkins…I also grow a commodity crop of field corn. I grow 40 acres and we are just finishing harvesting it this week. I fill my bin with the corn and hold onto until March when I sell it. The price usually increases from 25 cents to 50 cents per bushel. When sold, the corn is trucked to a grain elevator in Oxford, PA where it could ultimately end up as animal feed, corn oil for cooking, sugar for soft drinks, or for ethanol production.

Nor’Eastern on the Farm

October 15, 2009…issued in the start of four days of unprecedented cold and intense rain. The two back to back Nor’Eastern’s forced the cancellations of school trips, birthday parties, and hayride bonfires. It had to happen over one of our busiest weekends for pumpkin picking. Thankfully we had some moments of clearing this afternoon…although it’s still VERY cold! Thanks to all of the families that braved the weather conditions and made it out to the farm today!! It was great to see all of you!!

The weather is supposed to improve….so here’s hoping for a good October 24th weekend! Stay warm! We’ll be in the high 60’s soon!

By the way…I’m still picking sweet corn!

Sugartown Strawberries’ and Restaurant Alba’s Chef’s Dinner

chefnightWell the weather didn’t start out very cooperative, the skies cleared and it was a beautiful afternoon and evening! We had close to 70 people in attendance for what was an amazing dinner! Fun was had by all. Sean Weinberg from Restaurant Alba and his team did an incredible job cooking all local sourced ingredients over Farmer Bob’s bonfire! The menu consisted of Sangria, Pancetta Wrapped Grilled Figs, Prosciutto and Bartlett Pears, Roasted Beet Salad, Hives for Lives Honey with Goat Cheese Crostini, Puree of Roasted Pumpkin Soup, Braised Chicken, Slow Roasted Pork, Adobo MArinated Skirt Steak, Summer Squash, Spiced Apple Cake…and that’s just a name a few of the items! Yum! Can’t wait to do it again next year!
